Frequently Asked Questions

How are the birds trained?
I intend to duplicate what happens in my loft, to the A.P.P loft they will exercise once a day only. And be fed once a day only. Road training , tossing will occur only 1 to 2 times a week. Once the initial educational tossing is over and done with my birds historically have been tossed once a week from 100 - 150 Klms nearly always on a Sunday, but they fly the roof for an hour a day 5 days a week. Hens will not be separated in the A.P.P loft.
How are the birds fed?
APP birds on arrival at the loft have hoppers with a mix, in them available to the birds from morning to night. The hoppers are removed and hand feeding once a day begins, once all the birds are well and truly settled. This started this year approx March 1st by this time the birds should be broken in, remember some birds came to the loft early January and some early February. Hand feeding to me means giving them as much as they can eat only once a day.
How are the birds medicated?
This will be done generally on a flock basis treatment, I will with whatever I think they need whenever I think they need something. Up until now March 12th some birds have been treated individually, for canker one eyed colds etc:. But once all the birds are in the loft, (no new entries) flock treatment commences the Veterinarian I use is Dr Walker of the Knox veterinary Clinic.
How far will the birds be tossed prior to the actual race?
I endeavor to get the A.P.P birds to a distance of 400 Klms prior to the actual race at least once or twice . This will occur on a Sunday and only on good weather days.
Where will the race be held from and when?
Parkes NSW to Lyndhurst Victoria, is approx 600 Klms not to short and not to long and virtually always a on the day fly. The 2008 race will be subject to weather, held on the 14th September. The VHA race from Parkes on the 13th September and from experience it has been found that a small number of birds have a better chance of coming through the same line of flight after 3000-4000 birds have flown that same race point the previous day
Will the race be an independent release?
Yes if the VHA holdover till Sunday the APP will holdover till Monday
Will I be able to witness the return of the birds from the race?
Yes I intend to have a marquee set up with food and beverage supplied at my cost but no alcohol should you need alcohol you will need to bring your own. Anyone who has entered the race will be welcome the same goes for basketing night. Basketing will be held on Friday evening on the 12th of September, at the Cranbourne Pigeon Centre, Donnelly Reserve Melways Map Ref 129 H11. All proceeds for food and drink sales will be retained by the Cranbourne Pigeon Centre.
How will I know how my entries are going?
Once the educational tossing has been completed and the tossing at the 100 klm point I will on this web site, have the returning birds electronic code numbers uploaded so that anyone who has entered the race will be able to follow their birds progress.
Will there be a Calcutta or Pools held on the race?
I don't know at this stage. If there is I will not take a percentage.
Can syndicates be formed?
Yes as an example in the 2008 race I have one syndicate which has 9 members who have entered a 3 bird team at a cost of $1210.00 which works out to a cost of $135.00 per person should only their 2 paid up birds go to the race and they were 1st and 2nd they would collect $60.000 AUD.
Why do I have to pay GST?
Because I am legally obliged to collect and pass the GST onto the Australian Tax Office, everything associated with the A.P.P is above board and legal no cash is being pocketed. No tax is being avoided the A.P.P is being run as a business the A.P.P has an Australian Business Number and is a registered business. This race has nothing to fear. Now is the appropriate time to point out this is the biggest prize money race within the pigeon sport ever held in Australia.
And its bound to create some publicity so the last thing I want is to worrying about the tax man deciding something is not right.... Remember $100.000.00 AUD Prize money for 2008
 As a point of interest.
In the A.P.P loft there are birds from NT, QLD, SA, NSW, VIC, TAS..
