About Us
My Name is John Van Beers, I am the owner operator of the APP.
The APP race came into being, after a discussion with an American fancier who runs a successful one loft race from his home address in Texas USA. After talking with him I realised that there was nothing to stop me from doing the same, secondly I became aware that reasonably large amounts of Australian pigeon fanciers money was going over seas into one loft races, with not a real lot coming back, and this has been going on for more than ten years.
I have estimated that as much as 1.5 million AUD has left Australian shores, in the form of entry fees etc. I am of the opinion that it is time to try to do something to keep our fraternity's money here in Australia.
The APP does not and cannot hope to compete with the very large successful one loft races held overseas. Our quarantine laws and costs make sending pigeons to Australia to compete in one loft races unviable. How ever we can still race for good prize money within Australia if entry fees are realistic and reasonable numbers of birds are entered. It was with this in mind that I set out to run the APP race.
My first decision was to operate a race that would support itself financially. By this I mean no one has been asked to donate anything towards the APP for nothing the only thing supplied to the APP race is the electronic timing system which mega clocking systems offered without being asked, a big thank you goes out to Mega.
Prior to actually starting the APP I decided that the requirements needed to run the race are as follows.
- At least .5 of a hectare of vacant land with services and no troublesome neighbours.
- A loft purposely built to accommodate approximately 750 birds.
- Someone with time to manage the actual loft, feeding cleaning etc.
- Someone with credibility to do the above.
- Someone with adequate finances to provide all of the above.
- Someone with enough enthusiasm to take on the above.
- Someone with a stable life and a supportive spouse or family in the background.
- Honesty & Integrity going through the requirements I decided that I personally can fill the requirements better than most fanciers can.
Finances
I am not filthy rich however I am comfortable and I have invested a pretty large amount of money and time to date, be it in loft building, training unit, advertising, printing brochures etc: not to mention curtailing my farm operation hence income. I have advertised that $100.000 AUD is absolutely guaranteed for the 2008 A.P.P Race and this is correct I have locked this amount away for prize money to be dispersed after September 14th 2008.
Enthusiasm
It would be generally agreed by most people who know me that I eat, sleep, and breathe racing pigeons and have done so for over 30 years. 2008 is my 27th year of racing to my own loft, prior to starting on my own. I cleaned and trained an older fanciers loft for 3 yrs the first thing I did in the morning is feed, clean and train the birds, the last thing I did in daylight hours is feed, and care for the birds. This happens 365 days a year, my life is pretty much governed by racing pigeons. I think this qualifies for enthusiasm.

A stable and supportive family are required, I have been married to the same lady (Irene) for 24 years. The one and only and she is very very supportive and a very good foil to my sometimes aggressive and assertive nature. Any one who has come into contact with her either personally or by phone will know this to be the case. Behind every good man stands a better woman.
Honesty & Integrity
We would all be aware of the crooks and shysters that abound within our sport. The club secretary - treasurer who lose, misappropriate funds, the false pedigree merchants, the outrageous statement makers, the peddlers of rumours, the tall poppy cutters.
I do not fit any of the above criteria, if you are uncertain about entrusting me with your entry fees check me out I have been around a long long time..
If you're not in it you cannot win it
All of the previous requirements I have covered and I believe it shows that I can run a successful race with reasonable prize money, which more than likely to be won by Australian fancier. (The A.P.P does have a Belgium and English loft represented) Although I did not reach my long term anticipated entry numbers I think the $200,000 AUD is not to be sniggered at. If you're not in it you cannot win it.
To the fanciers who have got behind the A.P.P and entered the 2008 race. I thank you sincerely without your commitment there would be no race!.
